Last week I presented "Faster Rasters in the Cloud" at London #GeoMob. This was a chance to expand on our recent work building a serverless raster data service. In the presentation I focused on how a serverless approach helped us solve the business challenge of creating efficient services around large data-sets.

How do we serve big rasters whilst maintaining performance at scale?

I covered the tech behind the service in my previous post, but solving this challenge is really the driver behind investing in serverless as a company. The ability to build a service that seamlessly scales up and down in response to demand, whilst maintaining performance is what makes serverless so attractive. To achieve this with an architecture on physical machines (with capacity for peak demand) would be prohibitabively expensive. For more on the economies of serverless it's worth listening to Paul D.
